Horses can be an emotional mirror for humans. They respond to the feeling state we show. They are herd and prey animals, which means that they have a strong emotional sense and use this sense as a survival tool. They respond similarly to humans. Horses never hide their emotions.
Because of these qualities, horses can be used to help people heal from a variety of psychological issues.
We have 2 miniature horses: George and Scarlet.
We also have Magic the mini cob who is often dressed as a Unicorn.
On our team is also Tinkerbelle the fluffy Pomeranian and Nougat a very soft and gentle rabbit.

Whether it was coming home from a traumatic shift as a Police Officer, or taking our youngest son to the yard, we always understood the therapeutic value.
We took a course in Makaton when our son was 2 as he was diagnosed with global development delay and autistic traits. We noticed a significant improvement in communication and behaviour when around our horses.
The horses are very calming and can help regulate emotions. They are a safe space to clear your mind.
Connecting with horses (not just riding) can cause the brain to release positive neurotransmitters.
The 3 big ones being:
Oxytocin - the love hormone
Dopamine and serotonin - the happy feelings we get naturally.
How amazing is that?!
Increases physical activity - just being around them and engaging with the horses
encourages collaboration - not only with the horses but with the handlers. A great way to help patients see the importance of listening and compromising and thus, may be more willing to receive care.
Being around horses has also been proven to improve non verbal communication.
Being around horses boosts confidence and takes the centre of attention away from the person to the horse, which boots confidence, independence and removes that barrier to communication. Many people with communication issues do not enjoy feeling the centre of focus and horses can bridge that gap.
